Although everyone wishes they could just pocket balls, defense is an important part of pool, regardless what the resident bar pool player may tell you. No one in the world can run out every rack that lays before them, so if you want to win offense isn’t always the best choice.

Figuring out how to cause problems for your opponent, maintain control of the table and your advantage are all useful parts of defensive play when trying to win games. Often times a botched defensive play from your opponent can allow you to turn the tables with an even better executed defensive play switching the initiative. If you can master defense, you’ll be able to stay out of your chair much more often on the offensive.
